Playing periodic audio in background using AVFoundation - facing audio session startup failure
Hello everyone, I’m new to Swift development and have been working on an audio module that plays a specific sound at regular intervals - similar to a workout timer that signals switching exercises every few minutes. But once the app goes into the background, the scheduled callback runs, yet the audio engine fails to start, resulting in an error with code 561015905. Interestingly, if the app is already playing audio before going to the background, the scheduled sounds continue to play as expected. I have added the required background audio mode to my Info plist file by including the key UIBackgroundModes with the value audio. Is there anything else I should configure? What is the best practice to play periodic audio when the app runs in the background? How do apps like turn-by-turn navigation handle continuous audio playback in the background? Any advice or pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Why does AVAudioRecorder show 8 kHz when iPhone hardware is 48 kHz?

After playing an HDR video on iPhone for a while, the HDR effect disappears and the screen brightness decrease

Steps to reproduce: Create an AVPlayer to loop an HDR video, specify the video frame format as kCVPixelFormatType_420YpCbCr10BiPlanarVideoRange Create a timer to get the video frame CVPixelBufferRef at 30 frames per second Use AVSampleBufferDisplayLayer to display CVPixelBufferRef on the screen Don't operate the phone, wait for a period of time (such as 40 minutes), the HDR effect disappears and the screen darkens Note: You need to use an iPhone device, iOS 18.5 and below operating system You need to ensure that the HDR video is played in a loop, that is, to ensure that the screen continues to display HDR content, wait for a period of time, depending on different devices, you need to wait for 20-40 minutes. In the iPhone Photos app,the same problem will occur after playing HDR video in a loop for a long time Expected Results: When rendering HDR content for a long time, it is guaranteed that there is always an HDR effect, and the HDR content and screen will not be darkened. PHPickerViewController Not Offering public.hevc UTI for a Known HEVC Video
I'm working on an app where a user needs to select a video from their Photos library, and I need to get the original, unmodified HEVC (H.265) data stream to preserve its encoding. The Problem I have confirmed that my source videos are HEVC. I can record a new video with my iPhone 15 Pro Max camera set to "High Efficiency," export the "Unmodified Original" from Photos on my Mac, and verify that the codec is MPEG-H Part2/HEVC (H.265). However, when I select that exact same video in my app using PHPickerViewController, the itemProvider does not list public.hevc as an available type identifier. This forces me to fall back to a generic movie type, which results in the system providing me with a transcoded H.264 version of the video. any app shows a black square instead of the camera picture
Hi! I am making an app for Apple Vision pro (VisionOS 2.5) that is scanning the surroundings and recognises all the texts around you. I tried to use the AVCaptureSession library, but when I run the app from xcode on the real AVP device, the camera is not accessible. I enabled the camera access in my Info.plist: NSCameraUsageDescription Used for live text recognition and I checked camera settings in the AVP, there are no restrictions. However I have always a black square with a crossed camera icon displayed instead of the image from the camera. I tried a couple of different apps from Github using the AVCaptureSession and they all display the black square instead of the picture. What can be wrong with the camera?

MIDI output form Standalone MIDI Processor Demo App to DAW
I am trying to get MIDI output from the AU Host demo app using the recent MIDI processor example. The processor works correctly in Logic Pro, but I cannot send MIDI from the AUv3 extension in standalone mode using the default host app to another program (e.g., Ableton). The MIDI manager, which is part of the standalone host app, works fine, and I can send MIDI using it directly—Ableton receives it without issues. I have already set the midiOutputNames in the extension, and the midiOutBlock is mapped. However, the MIDI data from the AUv3 extension does not reach Ableton in standalone mode. I suspect the issue is that midiOutBlock might never be called in the plugin, or perhaps an input to the plugin is missing, which prevents it from sending MIDI. I am currently using the default routing. I have modified the MIDI manager such that it works well as described above. AirDropped Videos from Photos Save to Files Instead of Photos on Receiving Device
My app allows users to capture and save videos to the Photos app using the following Swift code: PHPhotoLibrary.shared().performChanges { PHAssetChangeRequest.creationRequestForAssetFromVideo(atFileURL: fileURL) } completionHandler: { success, error in Videos are successfully saved to Photos and play correctly. However, users report that when they AirDrop these videos from the Photos app to another device (e.g., iPad to iPhone), the videos are saved in the Files app on the receiving device instead of the Photos app. This issue is more common with higher-resolution videos, such as 2K, recorded in HEVC format at 30 fps. I wasn't able to reproduce the issue locally. I've found a thread in public apple forum: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255276865?sortBy=rank but I wonder maybe there are some special flags that I should clear or add to my videos (e.g. PHAssetChangeRequest)? PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in AVFoundation error -11800 "The operation could not be completed" reason An unknown error occurred (-12815)
When trying to edit some Live Photos, calling PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in the following error: Error Domain=AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11800 "The operation could not be completed" UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=An unknown error occurred (-12815), NSLocalizedDescription=The operation could not be completed, NSUnderlyingError=0x300d05380 {Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-12815 "(null)"}} I was able to replicate it on my device by taking a new Live Photo. Not sure what's wrong with that one specifically, not all Live Photos replicate the issue. I've submitted FB15880825 with a sysdiagnose and a Photos Diagnostics as well. Any ideas what's going on here? It's impacting multiple customers. Thanks!

Any one experience this bug, when playing a video the bluetooth headphones loose audio? my workaround is to select from one of the other audio outputs, and go back again and select the affected headphone.

AVAssetWriterInput Crash on appendSampleBuffer Converting PCM
Overview We are producing audio in real time from an editing application and are trying to put that on an HLS stream. We attempt to submit PCM samples through an audio writer but are getting a crash after a select number of samples have been appended. Depending on the number of audio frames in the PCM buffer, we might get more iterations before the crash but it always has the same traceback (see below). Code The setup is rather simple. Unexpected AVAudioSession behavior after iOS 18.5 causing audio loss in VoIP calls
After updating to iOS 18.5, we’ve observed that outgoing audio from our app intermittently stops being transmitted during VoIP calls using AVAudioSession configured with .playAndRecord and .voiceChat. The session is set active without errors, and interruptions are handled correctly, yet audio capture suddenly ceases mid-call. This was not observed in earlier iOS versions (≤ 18.4). AVCaptureSession startRunning is slow
AVCaptureSession's startRunning method is thread blocking and seems to be slow. What is this method doing behind the scenes? For context: I'm working on Simulator Camera support and I have a 'fake' AVCaptureDevice that might be causing this. My hypothesis is that AVCaptureSession tries to connect to the device and waits for a notification to be posted back. I'd love to find a way to let my fake device message AVCaptureSession that it's connected.

AVSpeechSynthesisVoices available on device
Hello there! Is there any list of voices that are always available on iOS/iPadOS devices? It seems that AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.voice.compact.en-US.Samantha") is always available on all devices. I thought that AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.ttsbundle.siri_Nicky_en-US_compact") and AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.ttsbundle.siri_Aaron_en-US_compact") were available by default on certain newer devices. Is this true? I also noticed that on the same iPad where I was using those 2 voices (Nicky and Aaron) - when I updated to the iPadOS 26 beta, those voices were no longer available. Any information you can share about which voices should be reliably available on which devices would be extremely helpful for our development. Thanks so much!

PHFetchOptions.includeHiddenAssets does not correctly return asset by id
When attempting to access a PHAsset that is in the hidden folder of iOS26, the PHFetchResult always returns no items, even when the user has granted full access to photos and even when includeHiddenAssets is true. PHPickerViewController Not Offering public.hevc UTI for a Known HEVC Video

any app shows a black square instead of the camera picture
Hi! I am making an app for Apple Vision pro (VisionOS 2.5) that is scanning the surroundings and recognises all the texts around you. I tried to use the AVCaptureSession library, but when I run the app from xcode on the real AVP device, the camera is not accessible. I enabled the camera access in my Info.plist: NSCameraUsageDescription Used for live text recognition and I checked camera settings in the AVP, there are no restrictions. However I have always a black square with a crossed camera icon displayed instead of the image from the camera. I tried a couple of different apps from Github using the AVCaptureSession and they all display the black square instead of the picture. What can be wrong with the camera?

MIDI output form Standalone MIDI Processor Demo App to DAW
I am trying to get MIDI output from the AU Host demo app using the recent MIDI processor example. The processor works correctly in Logic Pro, but I cannot send MIDI from the AUv3 extension in standalone mode using the default host app to another program (e.g., Ableton). The MIDI manager, which is part of the standalone host app, works fine, and I can send MIDI using it directly—Ableton receives it without issues. I have already set the midiOutputNames in the extension, and the midiOutBlock is mapped. However, the MIDI data from the AUv3 extension does not reach Ableton in standalone mode. I suspect the issue is that midiOutBlock might never be called in the plugin, or perhaps an input to the plugin is missing, which prevents it from sending MIDI. I am currently using the default routing. I have modified the MIDI manager such that it works well as described above. AirDropped Videos from Photos Save to Files Instead of Photos on Receiving Device
My app allows users to capture and save videos to the Photos app using the following Swift code: PHPhotoLibrary.shared().performChanges { PHAssetChangeRequest.creationRequestForAssetFromVideo(atFileURL: fileURL) } completionHandler: { success, error in Videos are successfully saved to Photos and play correctly. However, users report that when they AirDrop these videos from the Photos app to another device (e.g., iPad to iPhone), the videos are saved in the Files app on the receiving device instead of the Photos app. This issue is more common with higher-resolution videos, such as 2K, recorded in HEVC format at 30 fps. I wasn't able to reproduce the issue locally. I've found a thread in public apple forum: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255276865?sortBy=rank but I wonder maybe there are some special flags that I should clear or add to my videos (e.g. PHAssetChangeRequest)? PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in AVFoundation error -11800 "The operation could not be completed" reason An unknown error occurred (-12815)
When trying to edit some Live Photos, calling PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in the following error: Error Domain=AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11800 "The operation could not be completed" UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=An unknown error occurred (-12815), NSLocalizedDescription=The operation could not be completed, NSUnderlyingError=0x300d05380 {Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-12815 "(null)"}} I was able to replicate it on my device by taking a new Live Photo. Not sure what's wrong with that one specifically, not all Live Photos replicate the issue. I've submitted FB15880825 with a sysdiagnose and a Photos Diagnostics as well. We attempt to submit PCM samples through an audio writer but are getting a crash after a select number of samples have been appended. Hello, I'm trying to receive parquet files using the example that provided in documentation. I've done all required steps but receive constantly error 500 with "Upstream Service Error". By looking into the issues list, seems this error exists for months. Is it possible to get it working?

After updating to iOS 18.5, we’ve observed that outgoing audio from our app intermittently stops being transmitted during VoIP calls using AVAudioSession configured with .playAndRecord and .voiceChat. The session is set active without errors, and interruptions are handled correctly, yet audio capture suddenly ceases mid-call. This was not observed in earlier iOS versions (≤ 18.4). Regarding the detection of screen orientation (portrait/landscape) in CMSampleBuffer when using ReplayKit for background screen recording
I'm currently using ReplayKit for background screen recording, but I can't determine whether the screen is in landscape mode from the CMSampleBuffer. All other APIs for detecting screen orientation are foreground-based. What should I do?

AVCaptureSession startRunning is slow
AVCaptureSession's startRunning method is thread blocking and seems to be slow. What is this method doing behind the scenes? For context: I'm working on Simulator Camera support and I have a 'fake' AVCaptureDevice that might be causing this. My hypothesis is that AVCaptureSession tries to connect to the device and waits for a notification to be posted back. I'd love to find a way to let my fake device message AVCaptureSession that it's connected.

AVSpeechSynthesisVoices available on device
Hello there! Is there any list of voices that are always available on iOS/iPadOS devices? It seems that AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.voice.compact.en-US.Samantha") is always available on all devices. I thought that AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.ttsbundle.siri_Nicky_en-US_compact") and AVSpeechSynthesisVoice(identifier: "com.apple.ttsbundle.siri_Aaron_en-US_compact") were available by default on certain newer devices. Is this true? I also noticed that on the same iPad where I was using those 2 voices (Nicky and Aaron) - when I updated to the iPadOS 26 beta, those voices were no longer available. Any information you can share about which voices should be reliably available on which devices would be extremely helpful for our development. Thanks so much!

Issue Description I'm implementing a system audio capture feature using AudioHardwareCreateProcessTap and AudioHardwareCreateAggregateDevice.
