AudioUnit may experience silent capture issues on iPadOS 18.4.1 or 18.5.
Among the millions of users of our online product, we have identified through data metrics that the silent audio data capture rate on iPadOS 18.4.1 or 18.5 has increased abnormally. However, we are unable to reproduce the issue. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Async AVAudioPlayerNode.scheduleBuffer stutters

I've tried all combinations of options and completionCallbackType but no luck. I've tried increasing the buffer size but that just spaces out the stutters because the buffer is larger. What am I missing about this API?

Wi-Fi Access Point Not Reconnecting While AVAudioSession Is Active
We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions: The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset). AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app). The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect. Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active. However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again. We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation. It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction? Test Environment: Device: iPhone 13 mini iOS: 17.5.1 Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band Accessories: Bluetooth headset We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!

Unique identifier of a MIDI device
Hello, I need to know what is a unique identifier of a MIDI device (source/destination). Important note: I want to get the same ID when a device is reconnected (unplugged and then plugged again). The main candidate is kMIDIPropertyUniqueID property. But I don't know if it meets the requirement above or not. Additional question: is it always available for any endpoint? Also there is kMIDIPropertyDeviceID property. What about it? And one more option is just MIDIEndpointRef returned by MIDIGetSource or MIDIGetDestination. So what is the proper way to get ID which persists between device reconnections?

I'm currently trying to develope ipod control function on IVI for vehicle. From previous experience I remember we need to implement iTunetagging, but since I can't find it in Accessory Firmware Specification R46, I'm wondering whether iTunesTagging is no longer support. How should playback readiness be determined with AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer when using AirPlay?
I’m implementing a custom playback pipeline using AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer together with AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer. hasSufficientMediaDataForReliablePlaybackStart appears to be the intended signal for determining when enough media has been queued to start playback. For local playback, this works well in practice — the property becomes true after a reasonable amount of media is enqueued. However, when the output route is AirPlay, using this property becomes difficult: AirPlay requires significantly more buffered media before the renderer reports sufficient data. The required preroll amount is much larger than for local playback. For short assets, it is possible to enqueue the entire audio track and still never observe hasSufficientMediaDataForReliablePlaybackStart == true. In that situation there is no more media data to enqueue, but the renderer still reports that playback is not ready. Given this behavior, what is the recommended way to determine playback readiness when using AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer with AirPlay?

How to detect when iOS Camera app starts video recording (with Allow Audio Playback ON)?
Since iOS 18, the system setting “Allow Audio Playback” (enabled by default) allows third-party app audio to continue playing while the user is recording video with the Camera app. This has created a problem for the app I’m developing. ➡️ The problem: My app plays continuous audio in both foreground and background states. If the user starts recording video using the iOS Camera app, the app’s audio — still playing in the background — gets captured in the video — obviously an unintended behavior. Yes, the user could stop the app manually before starting the video recording, but that can’t be guaranteed. As a developer, I need a way to stop the app’s audio before the video recording begins. So far, I haven’t found a reliable way to detect when video recording starts if ‘Allow Audio Playback’ is ON. ➡️ What I’ve tried: — AVAudioSession.interruptionNotification → doesn’t fire — devicesChangedEventStream → not triggered I don’t want to request mic permission (app doesn’t use mic). also, disabling the app from playing audio in the background isn’t an option as it is a crucial part of the user experience ➡️ What I need: A reliable, supported way to detect when the Camera app begins video recording, without requiring mic access — so I can stop audio and avoid unintentional overlap with the user’s recordings. Any official guidance, workarounds, or AVFoundation techniques would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ducking MusicKit output when playing another sound

macOS sample for AVAudioEngine recording with playthrough
Hi, I'm still stuck getting a basic record-with-playthrouh pipeline to work. Has anyone a sample of setting up a AVAudioEngine pipeline for recording with playthrough? Plkaythrough works with AVPlayerNode as input but not with any microphone input. The docs mention the "enabled state" of the outputNode of the engine without explaining the concept, i.e. how to enable an output. When the engine renders to and from an audio device, the AVAudioSession category and the availability of hardware determines whether an app performs output. Check the output node’s output format (specifically, the hardware format) for a nonzero sample rate and channel count to see if output is in an enabled state. Well, in my setup the output is NOT enabled, and any attempt to switch (e.g. audioEngine.outputNode.auAudioUnit.setDeviceID(deviceID) )/ attach a dedicated device / ... results in exceptions / errors

Process to request the restricted entitlement behind “DJ with Apple Music” (tempo control / time-stretch on Apple Music streams)?
Hi, I’m an iOS developer building an app with an use case that needs advanced playback on Apple Music subscription streams, specifically: • Real-time tempo change (BPM) during playback — i.e., time-stretch with key-lock, not just crossfade. • Beat-matched transitions between tracks. From what I can tell, this capability seems to exist only for approved partners and isn’t available through public MusicKit. Question: What’s the official request path to be evaluated for that restricted partner entitlement (application form, questionnaire, NDA, or internal team/BD contact)? If the entitlement identifier is internal, how can I get my account routed to the right Apple Music team? For reference, publicly announced partners include Algoriddim djay, Serato DJ Pro, rekordbox (AlphaTheta), and Engine DJ—all of which appear to implement mixing features that imply advanced playback (tempo/beat-matching) on Apple Music content. Mac Catalyst: AUv3 Extension no longer works on MacOS, still works on iOS
I have a Catalyst app ('container') which hosts an embedded AUv3 Audio Unit extension ('plugin'). This used to work for years and has worked with this project until a few days ago. it still works on iOS as expected on MacOS the extension is never registered/installed and won't load extension won't show up with AUVal seems to have stopped working with the 26.1 XCode update I'm fairly certain the problem is not code related (i.e. likely build settings, project settings, entitlements, signing, etc.) I have compared all settings with another still-working project and can't find any meaningful difference (I can't request code-level support because even the minimal thing vastly exceeds the 250 lines of code limit.) How can I debug the issue? I literally don't know where to start to fix this problem, short of rebuilding the entire thing and hope that it magically starts working again.

Windows Apple Music: how to enumerate the local library or export it? Is Library.musicdb documented / API available?
Environment Windows 11 [edition/build]: [e.g., 23H2, 22631.x] Apple Music for Windows version: [e.g., 1.x.x from Microsoft Store] Library folder: C:\Users<user>\Music\Apple Music\Apple Music Library.musiclibrary Summary I need a supported way to programmatically enumerate the local Apple Music library on Windows (track file paths, playlists, etc.) for reconciliation with the on-disk Media folder. On macOS this used to be straightforward via scripting/export; on Windows I can’t find an equivalent. What I’m seeing in the library bundle Library.musicdb → not SQLite. First 4 bytes: 68 66 6D 61 ("hfma"). Library Preferences.musicdb → also starts with "hfma". artwork.sqlite → SQLite but appears to be artwork cache only (no track file paths). Extras.itdb → has SQLite format 3 header but (from a quick scan) not seeing track locations. Genius.itdb → not a SQLite database on this machine. What I’ve tried Attempted to open Library.musicdb with SQLite providers → error: “file is not a database.” Binary/string scans (ASCII, UTF-16LE/BE, null-stripped) of Library.musicdb → did not reveal file paths or obvious plist/XML/JSON blobs. The Windows Apple Music UI doesn’t appear to expose “Export Library / Export Playlist” like legacy iTunes did, and I can’t find a public API for local library enumeration on Windows. What I’m trying to accomplish Read local track entries (absolute or relative paths), detect broken links, and reconcile against the Media folder. A read-only solution is fine; I do not need to modify the library. Questions for Apple Is the Library.musicdb file format documented anywhere, or is there a supported SDK/API to enumerate the local library on Windows? Is there a supported export mechanism (CLI, UI, or API) on Windows Apple Music to dump the local library and/or playlists (XML/CSV/JSON)? Is there a Windows-specific equivalent to the old iTunes COM automation or any MusicKit surface that can return local library items (not streaming catalog) and their file locations? If none of the above exist today, is there a recommended workaround from Apple for library reconciliation on Windows (e.g., documented support for importing M3U/M3U8 to rebuild the local library from disk)? Are there any plans/timeline for adding Windows feature parity with iTunes/Music on macOS for exporting or scripting the local library? Why this matters For large personal libraries, users occasionally end up with orphaned files on disk or broken links in the app. Without an export or API, it’s difficult to audit and fix at scale on Windows. AVAudioEngine installTap stops working after phone call interruption on iPhone 16e
Environment Device: iPhone 16e iOS Version: 18.4.1 - 18.7.1 Framework: AVFoundation (AVAudioEngine) Problem Summary On iPhone 16e (iOS 18.4.1-18.7.1), the installTap callback stops being invoked after resuming from a phone call interruption. This issue is specific to phone call interruptions and does not occur on iPhone 14, iPhone SE 3, or earlier devices. Expected Behavior After a phone call interruption ends and audioEngine.start() is called, the previously installed tap should continue receiving audio buffers. Actual Behavior After resuming from phone call interruption: Tap callback is no longer invoked No audio data is captured No errors are thrown Engine appears to be running normally Note: Normal pause/resume (without phone call interruption) works correctly. AVAudioUnitSampler Bug with Consolidated Audio Files
Hello, I've discovered a buffer initialization bug in AVAudioUnitSampler that happens when loading presets with multiple zones referencing different regions in the same audio file (monolith/concatenated samples approach). Almost all zones output silence (i.e. zeros) at the beginning of playback instead of starting with actual audio data. The Problem Setup: Single audio file (monolith) containing multiple concatenated samples Multiple zones in an .aupreset, each with different sample start and sample end values pointing to different regions of the same file All zones load successfully without errors Expected Behavior: All zones should play their respective audio regions immediately from the first sample. Actual Behavior: Last zone in the zone list: Works perfectly - plays audio immediately All other zones: Output [0, 0, 0, 0, ..., _audio_data] instead of [real_audio_data] The number of zeros varies from event to event for each zone. It can be a couple of samples (<30) up to several buffers. After the initial zeros, the correct audio plays normally, so there is no shift in audio playback, just missing samples at the beginning. Minimal Reproduction 1. Create Test Monolith Audio File Create a single Wav file with 3 concatenated 1-second samples (44.1kHz): Sample 1: frames 0-44099 (constant amplitude 0.3) Sample 2: frames 44100-88199 (constant amplitude 0.6) Sample 3: frames 88200-132299 (constant amplitude 0.9) 2. Create Test Preset Create an .aupreset with 3 zones all referencing the same file: Pseudo code <Zone array> <zone 1> start : 0, end: 44099, note: 60, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; <zone 2> start sample: 44100, note: 62, end sample: 88199, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; <zone 3> start sample: 88200, note: 64, end sample: 132299, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; </Zone array> 3. Different Audio Formats: CAF (Float32 PCM, Int16 PCM, both interleaved and non-interleaved) M4A (AAC compressed) WAV (uncompressed) SF2 (SoundFont2) Bug persists across all formats 2. CAF Region Chunks: Created CAF files with embedded region chunks defining zone boundaries Set zones with no sampleStart/sampleEnd in preset (nil values) AVAudioUnitSampler completely ignores CAF region metadata Bug persists 3. Unique Waveform IDs: Gave each zone a unique waveform ID (268435456, 268435457, 268435458) Each ID has its own file reference entry (all pointing to same physical file) Hypothesized this might trigger separate buffer initialization Bug persists - no improvement 4. Different Sample Rates: Tested: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz Bug occurs at all sample rates 5. Mono vs Stereo: Bug occurs with both mono and stereo files Environment macOS: Sonoma 14.x (tested across multiple minor versions) iOS: Tested on iOS 17.x with same results Xcode: 16.x Frameworks: AVFoundation, AudioToolbox Reproducibility: 100% reproducible with setup described above Impact & Use Case This bug severely impacts professional music applications that need: Small file sizes: Monolith files allow sharing compressed audio data (AAC/M4A) iOS file handle limits: Opening 400+ individual sample files is not viable on iOS Performance: Single file loading is much faster than hundreds of individual files Standard industry practice: Monolith/concatenated samples are used by EXS24, Kontakt, and most professional samplers Current Impact: Cannot use monolith files with AVAudioUnitSampler on iOS Forced to choose between: unusable audio (zeros at start) OR hitting iOS file limits No viable workaround exists Root Cause Hypothesis The bug appears to be in AVAudioUnitSampler's internal buffer initialization when: Multiple zones share the same source audio file Each zone specifies different sampleStart/sampleEnd offsets Key observation: The last zone in the zone array always works correctly. This is NOT related to: File permissions or security-scoped resources (separate files work fine) Audio codec issues (happens with uncompressed PCM too) Preset parsing (preset loads correctly, all zones are valid) Questions Is this a known issue? I couldn't find any documentation, bug reports, or discussions about this. Is there ANY workaround that allows monolith files to work with AVAudioUnitSampler? Alternative APIs? Is there a different API or approach for iOS that properly supports monolith sample files?

Correct way for an Audio Unit v3 to return fewer than requested number of samples given a buffer
I have an AUv3 plugin which uses an FFT - which requires n samples before it can produce any output - so, depending on the relation between the host's buffer size and the FFT window size, it may receive a several buffers of samples, producing no output, and then dumping out what it has once a sufficient number of samples have been received. This means that output is produced in fits and starts, in batches that match the FFT size (modulo oversampling) - e.g. if being fed buffers of 256 samples with an fft size of 1024, the output buffer sizes will be 0 for the first 3 buffers, and upon the fourth, the first 256 processed samples are returned and the remaining 768 cached; the next three buffers will return the remaining cached samples while processing and buffering subsequent ones, and so forth. The internal mechanics of that I have solved, caching output if the current output buffer is too small, and so forth - so it all works as advertised, and the plugin reports its latency correctly. And when run as an app in demo-mode, playback works as expected. In the plugin's render block, it captures the number of frames written, and if it is less than the number of frames passed in, adjusts the mDataByteSize of the output buffers to match the actual quantity of data being returned: unsigned int framesWritten = (unsigned int) processHelper->processWithEvents(inAudioBufferList, outAudioBufferList, timestamp, frameCount, realtimeEventListHead); if (framesWritten < frameCount) { for (UInt32 i = 0; i < outAudioBufferList->mNumberBuffers; ++i) { outAudioBufferList->mBuffers[i].mDataByteSize = framesWritten * 4; // assume 4 byte floats } } However, there are a couple of serious issues: auval -v fails it with - Render Test at 64 frames, sample rate: 22050 Hz ERROR: Output Buffer Size does not match requested When connected to Logic Pro, it appears that mDataByteSize is ignored, and the entire allocated buffer is read - audio has sections of silence snipped into it which corresponds the number of empty buffers being returned If I set Logic's buffer size to 1024 and use a 1024 sample FFT window, the plugin works correctly - but of course a plugin cannot dictate buffer size, and `1024 is too small a window size to be useful for anything but filtering very high frequencies This seems like it has to be a solvable problem, and most likely the issue is in how my code reports the number of usable samples in the returned buffer. So, what is the correct way for a plugin to report that it has no samples to return, but will, uh, real soon now? I know I could convert this plugin to be one that does offline rendering of the entire input, but this is real-time processing, just with a fixed amount of latency, so that should not be necessary.

Unable to play audio via MusicKit
Hey folks, I'm running into an odd issue suddenly with an app that had a working MusicKit integration before. I'm using ApplicationMusicPlayer to play Apple Music albums and songs. I'm testing on a physical device, signed in to Apple ID, and with a valid subscription. Apple Music via the first-party app works entirely fine on this device. The album artwork, track names, etc, all appear in the control center playback controls, but the music doesn't play. Trying to trigger playback with control center just results in it skipping to the next track, which doesn't play either. This exact code used to work. I have the MusicKit service selected in Apple Connect. Since this isn't entitlement-based, I'm not sure how else to check that I'm set up correctly. Spatial Audio on Mac - When and how to render using Audio Units?
I'm working on adding Spatial Audio support to a game on the Mac. I'm looking at the SpatialAudioRenderer sample but having some issues. It's unclear to me when a device is compatible with Spatial Audio and when I should attempt to render Spatial Audio. There is no property that I can find on the Mac that advertises Spatial Audio compatibility on a device. The sample crashes when the output device is a USB device. This includes the Apple Studio Display. The Apple Studio Display is supposed to be capable of rendering Spatial Audio. The device doesn't work with the sample - do I still need to render down the 7.1.4 source on this device? The sample always renders down to Stereo, but the Apple Studio Display is not a Stereo device. I'm a bit confused by the sample and when/how I should configure the mixing unit.

CoreMIDI driver - flow control
Hi, when a CoreMIDI driver controls physical HW it is probably quite commune to have to control the amount of MIDI data received from the system. What comes to mind is to just delay returning control of the MIDIDriverInterface::Send() callback to the calling process. While the application trying to send MIDI really stalls until the callback returns it seems only to be a side effect of a generally stalled CoreMIDI server. Between the callbacks the application can send as much MIDI data as it wants to CoreMIDI, it's buffering seems to be endless... However the HW might not be able to play out all the data. It seems there is no way to indicate an overflow/full buffer situation back the application/CoreMIDI. How is this supposed to work? Thanks, any hints or pointers are highly appreciated! Hagen.

AudioUnit may experience silent capture issues on iPadOS 18.4.1 or 18.5.
Among the millions of users of our online product, we have identified through data metrics that the silent audio data capture rate on iPadOS 18.4.1 or 18.5 has increased abnormally. However, we are unable to reproduce the issue. Has anyone encountered a similar issue? Async AVAudioPlayerNode.scheduleBuffer stutters

I've tried all combinations of options and completionCallbackType but no luck. I've tried increasing the buffer size but that just spaces out the stutters because the buffer is larger. What am I missing about this API?

Wi-Fi Access Point Not Reconnecting While AVAudioSession Is Active
We’ve encountered a reproducible issue where the iPhone fails to reconnect to a Wi-Fi access point under the following conditions: The device is connected to a 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. A Bluetooth audio accessory is connected (e.g. headset). AVAudioSession is active (such as during a voice call or when using the Voice Memos app). The user moves away from the access point, causing a disconnect. Upon returning within range, the access point is no longer recognized or reconnected while AVAudioSession remains active. However, if the Bluetooth device is disconnected or the AVAudioSession is deactivated, the Wi-Fi access point is immediately recognized again. We confirmed this behavior not only in my app but also using Apple's built-in Voice Memos app, suggesting this is not specific to our implementation. It appears that the Wi-Fi system deprioritizes reconnection while AVAudioSession is engaged. Could this be by design? Or is this a known issue or limitation with Wi-Fi and AVAudioSession interaction? Test Environment: Device: iPhone 13 mini iOS: 17.5.1 Wi-Fi: 2.4GHz band Accessories: Bluetooth headset We’d appreciate clarification on whether this is expected behavior or a bug. Thank you!

Unique identifier of a MIDI device
Hello, I need to know what is a unique identifier of a MIDI device (source/destination). Important note: I want to get the same ID when a device is reconnected (unplugged and then plugged again). The main candidate is kMIDIPropertyUniqueID property. But I don't know if it meets the requirement above or not. Additional question: is it always available for any endpoint? Also there is kMIDIPropertyDeviceID property. What about it? And one more option is just MIDIEndpointRef returned by MIDIGetSource or MIDIGetDestination. So what is the proper way to get ID which persists between device reconnections?

How should playback readiness be determined with AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer when using AirPlay?
I’m implementing a custom playback pipeline using AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer together with AVSampleBufferRenderSynchronizer. hasSufficientMediaDataForReliablePlaybackStart appears to be the intended signal for determining when enough media has been queued to start playback. For local playback, this works well in practice — the property becomes true after a reasonable amount of media is enqueued. However, when the output route is AirPlay, using this property becomes difficult: AirPlay requires significantly more buffered media before the renderer reports sufficient data. The required preroll amount is much larger than for local playback. For short assets, it is possible to enqueue the entire audio track and still never observe hasSufficientMediaDataForReliablePlaybackStart == true. In that situation there is no more media data to enqueue, but the renderer still reports that playback is not ready. Given this behavior, what is the recommended way to determine playback readiness when using AVSampleBufferAudioRenderer with AirPlay?

How to detect when iOS Camera app starts video recording (with Allow Audio Playback ON)?
Since iOS 18, the system setting “Allow Audio Playback” (enabled by default) allows third-party app audio to continue playing while the user is recording video with the Camera app. This has created a problem for the app I’m developing. ➡️ The problem: My app plays continuous audio in both foreground and background states. If the user starts recording video using the iOS Camera app, the app’s audio — still playing in the background — gets captured in the video — obviously an unintended behavior. Yes, the user could stop the app manually before starting the video recording, but that can’t be guaranteed. As a developer, I need a way to stop the app’s audio before the video recording begins. So far, I haven’t found a reliable way to detect when video recording starts if ‘Allow Audio Playback’ is ON. ➡️ What I’ve tried: — AVAudioSession.interruptionNotification → doesn’t fire — devicesChangedEventStream → not triggered I don’t want to request mic permission (app doesn’t use mic). also, disabling the app from playing audio in the background isn’t an option as it is a crucial part of the user experience ➡️ What I need: A reliable, supported way to detect when the Camera app begins video recording, without requiring mic access — so I can stop audio and avoid unintentional overlap with the user’s recordings. Any official guidance, workarounds, or AVFoundation techniques would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ducking MusicKit output when playing another sound

macOS sample for AVAudioEngine recording with playthrough
Hi, I'm still stuck getting a basic record-with-playthrouh pipeline to work. Has anyone a sample of setting up a AVAudioEngine pipeline for recording with playthrough? Plkaythrough works with AVPlayerNode as input but not with any microphone input. The docs mention the "enabled state" of the outputNode of the engine without explaining the concept, i.e. how to enable an output. When the engine renders to and from an audio device, the AVAudioSession category and the availability of hardware determines whether an app performs output. Check the output node’s output format (specifically, the hardware format) for a nonzero sample rate and channel count to see if output is in an enabled state. Well, in my setup the output is NOT enabled, and any attempt to switch (e.g. audioEngine.outputNode.auAudioUnit.setDeviceID(deviceID) )/ attach a dedicated device / ... results in exceptions / errors

Process to request the restricted entitlement behind “DJ with Apple Music” (tempo control / time-stretch on Apple Music streams)?

Mac Catalyst: AUv3 Extension no longer works on MacOS, still works on iOS
I have a Catalyst app ('container') which hosts an embedded AUv3 Audio Unit extension ('plugin'). This used to work for years and has worked with this project until a few days ago. it still works on iOS as expected on MacOS the extension is never registered/installed and won't load extension won't show up with AUVal seems to have stopped working with the 26.1 XCode update I'm fairly certain the problem is not code related (i.e. likely build settings, project settings, entitlements, signing, etc.) I have compared all settings with another still-working project and can't find any meaningful difference (I can't request code-level support because even the minimal thing vastly exceeds the 250 lines of code limit.) How can I debug the issue? I literally don't know where to start to fix this problem, short of rebuilding the entire thing and hope that it magically starts working again.

Windows Apple Music: how to enumerate the local library or export it? Is Library.musicdb documented / API available?
Environment Windows 11 [edition/build]: [e.g., 23H2, 22631.x] Apple Music for Windows version: [e.g., 1.x.x from Microsoft Store] Library folder: C:\Users<user>\Music\Apple Music\Apple Music Library.musiclibrary Summary I need a supported way to programmatically enumerate the local Apple Music library on Windows (track file paths, playlists, etc.) for reconciliation with the on-disk Media folder. On macOS this used to be straightforward via scripting/export; on Windows I can’t find an equivalent. What I’m seeing in the library bundle Library.musicdb → not SQLite. First 4 bytes: 68 66 6D 61 ("hfma"). Library Preferences.musicdb → also starts with "hfma". artwork.sqlite → SQLite but appears to be artwork cache only (no track file paths). Extras.itdb → has SQLite format 3 header but (from a quick scan) not seeing track locations. Genius.itdb → not a SQLite database on this machine. What I’ve tried Attempted to open Library.musicdb with SQLite providers → error: “file is not a database.” Binary/string scans (ASCII, UTF-16LE/BE, null-stripped) of Library.musicdb → did not reveal file paths or obvious plist/XML/JSON blobs. The Windows Apple Music UI doesn’t appear to expose “Export Library / Export Playlist” like legacy iTunes did, and I can’t find a public API for local library enumeration on Windows. What I’m trying to accomplish Read local track entries (absolute or relative paths), detect broken links, and reconcile against the Media folder. A read-only solution is fine; I do not need to modify the library. Questions for Apple Is the Library.musicdb file format documented anywhere, or is there a supported SDK/API to enumerate the local library on Windows? Is there a supported export mechanism (CLI, UI, or API) on Windows Apple Music to dump the local library and/or playlists (XML/CSV/JSON)? Is there a Windows-specific equivalent to the old iTunes COM automation or any MusicKit surface that can return local library items (not streaming catalog) and their file locations? If none of the above exist today, is there a recommended workaround from Apple for library reconciliation on Windows (e.g., documented support for importing M3U/M3U8 to rebuild the local library from disk)? Are there any plans/timeline for adding Windows feature parity with iTunes/Music on macOS for exporting or scripting the local library? Why this matters For large personal libraries, users occasionally end up with orphaned files on disk or broken links in the app. Without an export or API, it’s difficult to audit and fix at scale on Windows. AVAudioEngine installTap stops working after phone call interruption on iPhone 16e
Environment Device: iPhone 16e iOS Version: 18.4.1 - 18.7.1 Framework: AVFoundation (AVAudioEngine) Problem Summary On iPhone 16e (iOS 18.4.1-18.7.1), the installTap callback stops being invoked after resuming from a phone call interruption. This issue is specific to phone call interruptions and does not occur on iPhone 14, iPhone SE 3, or earlier devices. Expected Behavior After a phone call interruption ends and audioEngine.start() is called, the previously installed tap should continue receiving audio buffers. Actual Behavior After resuming from phone call interruption: Tap callback is no longer invoked No audio data is captured No errors are thrown Engine appears to be running normally Note: Normal pause/resume (without phone call interruption) works correctly. AVAudioUnitSampler Bug with Consolidated Audio Files
Hello, I've discovered a buffer initialization bug in AVAudioUnitSampler that happens when loading presets with multiple zones referencing different regions in the same audio file (monolith/concatenated samples approach). Almost all zones output silence (i.e. zeros) at the beginning of playback instead of starting with actual audio data. The Problem Setup: Single audio file (monolith) containing multiple concatenated samples Multiple zones in an .aupreset, each with different sample start and sample end values pointing to different regions of the same file All zones load successfully without errors Expected Behavior: All zones should play their respective audio regions immediately from the first sample. Actual Behavior: Last zone in the zone list: Works perfectly - plays audio immediately All other zones: Output [0, 0, 0, 0, ..., _audio_data] instead of [real_audio_data] The number of zeros varies from event to event for each zone. It can be a couple of samples (<30) up to several buffers. After the initial zeros, the correct audio plays normally, so there is no shift in audio playback, just missing samples at the beginning. Minimal Reproduction 1. Create Test Monolith Audio File Create a single Wav file with 3 concatenated 1-second samples (44.1kHz): Sample 1: frames 0-44099 (constant amplitude 0.3) Sample 2: frames 44100-88199 (constant amplitude 0.6) Sample 3: frames 88200-132299 (constant amplitude 0.9) 2. Create Test Preset Create an .aupreset with 3 zones all referencing the same file: Pseudo code <Zone array> <zone 1> start : 0, end: 44099, note: 60, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; <zone 2> start sample: 44100, note: 62, end sample: 88199, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; <zone 3> start sample: 88200, note: 64, end sample: 132299, waveform: ref_to_monolith.wav; </Zone array> 3. Different Audio Formats: CAF (Float32 PCM, Int16 PCM, both interleaved and non-interleaved) M4A (AAC compressed) WAV (uncompressed) SF2 (SoundFont2) Bug persists across all formats 2. CAF Region Chunks: Created CAF files with embedded region chunks defining zone boundaries Set zones with no sampleStart/sampleEnd in preset (nil values) AVAudioUnitSampler completely ignores CAF region metadata Bug persists 3. Unique Waveform IDs: Gave each zone a unique waveform ID (268435456, 268435457, 268435458) Each ID has its own file reference entry (all pointing to same physical file) Hypothesized this might trigger separate buffer initialization Bug persists - no improvement 4. Different Sample Rates: Tested: 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 96kHz Bug occurs at all sample rates 5. Mono vs Stereo: Bug occurs with both mono and stereo files Environment macOS: Sonoma 14.x (tested across multiple minor versions) iOS: Tested on iOS 17.x with same results Xcode: 16.x Frameworks: AVFoundation, AudioToolbox Reproducibility: 100% reproducible with setup described above Impact & Use Case This bug severely impacts professional music applications that need: Small file sizes: Monolith files allow sharing compressed audio data (AAC/M4A) iOS file handle limits: Opening 400+ individual sample files is not viable on iOS Performance: Single file loading is much faster than hundreds of individual files Standard industry practice: Monolith/concatenated samples are used by EXS24, Kontakt, and most professional samplers Current Impact: Cannot use monolith files with AVAudioUnitSampler on iOS Forced to choose between: unusable audio (zeros at start) OR hitting iOS file limits No viable workaround exists Root Cause Hypothesis The bug appears to be in AVAudioUnitSampler's internal buffer initialization when: Multiple zones share the same source audio file Each zone specifies different sampleStart/sampleEnd offsets Key observation: The last zone in the zone array always works correctly. This is NOT related to: File permissions or security-scoped resources (separate files work fine) Audio codec issues (happens with uncompressed PCM too) Preset parsing (preset loads correctly, all zones are valid) Questions Is this a known issue? I couldn't find any documentation, bug reports, or discussions about this. Is there ANY workaround that allows monolith files to work with AVAudioUnitSampler? Alternative APIs? Is there a different API or approach for iOS that properly supports monolith sample files?

Correct way for an Audio Unit v3 to return fewer than requested number of samples given a buffer
I have an AUv3 plugin which uses an FFT - which requires n samples before it can produce any output - so, depending on the relation between the host's buffer size and the FFT window size, it may receive a several buffers of samples, producing no output, and then dumping out what it has once a sufficient number of samples have been received. This means that output is produced in fits and starts, in batches that match the FFT size (modulo oversampling) - e.g. if being fed buffers of 256 samples with an fft size of 1024, the output buffer sizes will be 0 for the first 3 buffers, and upon the fourth, the first 256 processed samples are returned and the remaining 768 cached; the next three buffers will return the remaining cached samples while processing and buffering subsequent ones, and so forth. The internal mechanics of that I have solved, caching output if the current output buffer is too small, and so forth - so it all works as advertised, and the plugin reports its latency correctly. And when run as an app in demo-mode, playback works as expected. In the plugin's render block, it captures the number of frames written, and if it is less than the number of frames passed in, adjusts the mDataByteSize of the output buffers to match the actual quantity of data being returned: unsigned int framesWritten = (unsigned int) processHelper->processWithEvents(inAudioBufferList, outAudioBufferList, timestamp, frameCount, realtimeEventListHead); if (framesWritten < frameCount) { for (UInt32 i = 0; i < outAudioBufferList->mNumberBuffers; ++i) { outAudioBufferList->mBuffers[i].mDataByteSize = framesWritten * 4; // assume 4 byte floats } } However, there are a couple of serious issues: auval -v fails it with - Render Test at 64 frames, sample rate: 22050 Hz ERROR: Output Buffer Size does not match requested When connected to Logic Pro, it appears that mDataByteSize is ignored, and the entire allocated buffer is read - audio has sections of silence snipped into it which corresponds the number of empty buffers being returned If I set Logic's buffer size to 1024 and use a 1024 sample FFT window, the plugin works correctly - but of course a plugin cannot dictate buffer size, and `1024 is too small a window size to be useful for anything but filtering very high frequencies This seems like it has to be a solvable problem, and most likely the issue is in how my code reports the number of usable samples in the returned buffer. So, what is the correct way for a plugin to report that it has no samples to return, but will, uh, real soon now? I know I could convert this plugin to be one that does offline rendering of the entire input, but this is real-time processing, just with a fixed amount of latency, so that should not be necessary.

Unable to play audio via MusicKit
Hey folks, I'm running into an odd issue suddenly with an app that had a working MusicKit integration before. I'm using ApplicationMusicPlayer to play Apple Music albums and songs. I'm testing on a physical device, signed in to Apple ID, and with a valid subscription. Apple Music via the first-party app works entirely fine on this device. Attempting to play back any content at all gives the log: <ICUserIdentityStoreACAccountBackend: 0x1070bf3e0> Failed to initialize primary apple account, error=Error Domain=ICError Code=-7013 "Client is not entitled to access account store" UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=Client is not entitled to access account store} [ICUserIdentityStore] - initializing account histories with activeAccountDSID = nil, activeLockerAccountDSID = nil, timestamp = 14605951908 [ICUserIdentityStore] Failed to fetch local store account with error: Error Domain=ICError Code=-7013 "Client is not entitled to access account store" UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=Client is not entitled to access account store}. The album artwork, track names, etc, all appear in the control center playback controls, but the music doesn't play. Trying to trigger playback with control center just results in it skipping to the next track, which doesn't play either. This exact code used to work. I have the MusicKit service selected in Apple Connect. Since this isn't entitlement-based, I'm not sure how else to check that I'm set up correctly. I've tried deleting/reinstalling the app, restarting the device, cleaning/rebuilding, and deleting DerivedData, to no avail. Any help? Running Xcode 16.4 (16F6), testing on iOS 18.5 (22F76)

Spatial Audio on Mac - When and how to render using Audio Units?
I'm working on adding Spatial Audio support to a game on the Mac. I'm looking at the SpatialAudioRenderer sample but having some issues. It's unclear to me when a device is compatible with Spatial Audio and when I should attempt to render Spatial Audio. There is no property that I can find on the Mac that advertises Spatial Audio compatibility on a device. The sample crashes when the output device is a USB device. This includes the Apple Studio Display. The Apple Studio Display is supposed to be capable of rendering Spatial Audio. The device doesn't work with the sample - do I still need to render down the 7.1.4 source on this device? The sample always renders down to Stereo, but the Apple Studio Display is not a Stereo device. I'm a bit confused by the sample and when/how I should configure the mixing unit.

CoreMIDI driver - flow control
Hi, when a CoreMIDI driver controls physical HW it is probably quite commune to have to control the amount of MIDI data received from the system. What comes to mind is to just delay returning control of the MIDIDriverInterface::Send() callback to the calling process. While the application trying to send MIDI really stalls until the callback returns it seems only to be a side effect of a generally stalled CoreMIDI server. Between the callbacks the application can send as much MIDI data as it wants to CoreMIDI, it's buffering seems to be endless... However the HW might not be able to play out all the data. It seems there is no way to indicate an overflow/full buffer situation back the application/CoreMIDI. How is this supposed to work? Thanks, any hints or pointers are highly appreciated! Hagen.
